Why do we use disposable gloves?

Disposable gloves are gloves that are used one time and then disposed. There is no guarantee for the quality of a reused gloves ,hence need to be disposed. They can protect users health and the health of the person you care for. They help to reduce the risk of contamination of health-care workers hands.

How do we dispose Surgical gloves?

Improper disposal after use greatly increases the chance of transferring that contamination. Surgical glove is considered as medical waste. Surgical gloves used in patient contact and/or exposed to blood and other bodily fluids may be contaminated with hazardous substances, like viruses, and should be disposed of in medical waste bins  and as per local norms.

No, as gloves do not have the integrity for long time,Change disposable gloves when there is any sign of contamination.  Gloves may protect the wearer from harmful substances but if they're worn for too long, skin turns wrinkly, dry, and soft.

Protective and Medical gloves should be thick enough to protect the hands of surgeons from harmful liquid ,infections during surgery. However if a glove is too thick, the  sense of touch is lost. When it comes to surgical gloves ,it is very important that it should have perfect fit, grip to handle surgical instruments  properly. The real skill in latex dipping is achieving the optimal balance between wall thickness and sense of touch.

Why do we sanitise our hands before donning gloves and after doffing gloves?

Sanitising hands is important even if gloves are worn. Hand washing before and after using gloves is  to prevent the spread of germs. Hands should be clean without contamination when the  gloves are worn ,same is the case when removing gloves. Contaminated gloves can spread germs to your hands when you remove the gloves.

What does double donning mean and its significance?

Wearing two layers of gloves provides enhanced safety in situations of glove failure. Wearing gloves of two different colors significantly increases the awareness of perforation. When the outer glove is perforated the moisture that seeps through and allows the site of perforation to be more easily seen providing an alert for the wearer making them realize that they must immediately change their gloves.

What is meant by AQL?

AQL is Acceptable Quality Limit, is a quality specification that all glove manufacturers use to specify the pinhole rate or the defective units that are allowed in a batch of  gloves. This method testing follows EN ISO 2859-1,which is specifically for products where any testing of samples will lead to their destruction.The FDA specifies an AQL of 1.5 for surgical gloves and 2.5 for examination gloves. An AQL of 2.5 means the defect level from a large sampling of gloves will not be more than 2.5%. The EU, via the EN455 series of standards, requires that both examination and surgical gloves meet AQL 0.65.

Degradation is a measurement of the physical deterioration of the material due to contact with a chemical. The material may get harder, stiffer, more brittle, softer, weaker, or may swell. Degradation is tested according to EN 16253.

The gloves used to handle cytotoxic drugs should comply with astm standard D-6978-(05)-13 and be powder-free. Gloves are recommended to be nitrile, polyurethane, neoprene, or latex. Vinyl gloves should not be used.
